Versatile Style by Tracey

Archive for December 2014

The last two days I didn’t get photos done despite the fact that I was dressed and went out…

The battery on my phone died and the charger wasn’t in my camera case…

It took me two days to realize it was in the carry-on from the Ireland trip- the only bag not unpacked…

pop of animal

Animal print and cognac accessories , enough said..

Black leggings, chambray shirt, leopard scarf, brown boots and gold watch with pearl earrings

Another option with similar elements.

The Classy Cubicle: Happy Houndstooth {professional, office, work, women, fashion, wear, zara, elie tahari, corso como, sweater, a-line knit skirt, blue suede pumps, heels, fall trend}

Black and white with a pop of cobalt..

Back To #Black by Vivaluxury

Or all black with a pop of cobalt..

A slimming trick! Just about every girl could use this. Wear a form fitting tank top between your sweater and button-up shirt to keep your mid section from looking frumpy. This is especially helpful if the button-up is a bit baggy, as the tank will press and flatten it against your torso, hiding bunched up fabric and the outlines of the buttons.

Have you seen this neat trick?

Wearing a tight tank over a button up blouse to slim down the look of the blouse underneath..

Color combination

Here is a quick cheat sheet on colors to pair togethers?

Dear Readers, Are than any color combos on the cheat sheet that appeal to you?

I think I’ve done a lot of these, but love the Aqua ones as neutrals and yellow are all that come to mind for me..

Any fun plans for the Weekend?

I have tickets to The Nutcracker for tomorrow night and I am planning extra bowling practice on Sunday!

I love your comments, so make a bloggers day!

I am grateful that my son’s bump on the head didn’t require stitches..Yes the fun of boys..

I am grateful that my oldest finished his semester this week and is getting a nice break.

I am grateful that I’ve already wrapped about half the Christmas presents, this is not a norm for me,I usually end up getting my daughter to help me as she loves wrapping…

I am grateful my husband continues to bring home consistent paychecks and is on his way to getting a new vehicle that won’t hurt his hip when getting in and out, like his van does..

I am grateful that my dearest friend is being supported by her church and going to make it home for the holidays to Canada!

I am grateful that my friend’s 8 year old daughter wants Santa to come while they are in Canada, and that Auntie Tracey gets the privilege of creating that magic!

Today, I went for a very casual look..

It all began with the Aeropostale aztec print sweatshirt…

I bought it on clearance so no longer available..

I simply added a white tshirt, black skinny jeans and

my chambray boots from Ireland…

I would have preferred a more tight tshirt underneath this ,but this is what I have..

This is my wonderful houndstooth coat , bought last year from Burlington..

Another wet cold day today… but hey three days in a row with no sunglasses is a treat..

I am going to move the Merry Chirstmas sign closer so it’s in my pics for the Season…

Our morning started off with a neighbor ringing the door knob at 8:30 am….

He had two bags of ornaments similar to the ones on our tree that he’d found in his yard that morning…

They aren’t ours.. so my husband asked around to other neighbors and no one claimed them…

Dear Readers, I ate much better today and craved no carbs or sugar!  Now if only I can keep this up..I swear I am so out of whack for a few reasons… One is just the time of year, and it’s been colder than normal.  I think another thing is missing my mother like crazy… I think the five year mark combined with the Ireland trip and seeing the huge welcoming family greatly increased my sense of loss.  If that wasn’t enough this time of life with menopause approaching wreaks havoc, I went months without a cycle that decided to come back in October while on the Ireland trip… I can make excuses or I can stand strong in my resolve to not let his current weight gain remain or get even more out of control.. So, yesterday, I ordered a Fit Bit to keep me accountable for moving more and of my sleeping patterns.. The sleeping has really been an issue lately… I sleep for 4 hours and am then wide awake… Not one to function on such little sleep, I take a few hours to go back to sleep and usually get another 3 hours.. This means waking up at around 10:30 am… I don’t like that ,but it is what it is… Perhaps exercising more and getting rid of carbs and sugar may put that back in order..

Are any of you, my dear readers dealing with weight gain or problems sleeping in this stage of life? Anyone dealt with this and found solutions?  Would love some words of wisdom?

I am grateful that my son finally finished his homeschooling after stalling all day..

I am grateful that my daughter got snow at Boston College before she comes home for the holiday.

I am grateful for fast wonderful protein rich dishes we picked up at BJ’s…

I am grateful that I’ve managed to get a few items for each child that they don’t know about for Christmas..

I am actually wearing two different Hounds-tooth prints today…

My hat is grey and cream Hounds-tooth in a smaller scale.

I actually planned this outfit without the paisley scarf, but added it last minute.

I just felt the crew neck sweater needed something else…

Both my hat and scarf are from Burlington Coat Factory…

If you are lucky enough to live near one, I highly recommend them for great accessories at wonderful prices.

My sweater is Liz Claiborne via JC Penney and bought on clearance in July, purse is from Just Fab and boots are Issaac Mizrahi via QVC bought previously…

My grey jeggings are a few season’s old, actually they are a remnant of my pre- weight loss days when they fit much tighter… They are by Diane Gilman via HSN and a great quality jegging, here is her current offerings.

Another great brand I’ve discovered for jeggings is Hue, available at Nordstorm and Amazon...

This is the outside tree that my husband and son planted in a hole in the ground and do every year..

This tree was marked $169 ,but he managed to talk them down to just $50….

So much work goes into planting and staking this tree each year,

and has become a tradition our children appreciate greatly.

I know when the two who are away at college come home and  see this ,they will feel like they are home for the holidays…

My typical side pose didn’t happen today as it was misting when we took photos…

The misty rain coupled with my teen photographer standing in the street to take the tree photos meant he was jumping around and they all came out fuzzy… He suspected it at the time and apologized, and offered to retake them, but look relieved when I told him we would deal with what we had…

Dear Readers, I have a good hat collection by now and it’s a good thing because I hate winter and really do love wearing hats when I am outside… It’s my real life and not done just for my blog… I laughed at the idea that my new hair won’t get seen much.. I think it’s an added bonus to help create a boho feel to my winter outfits.

I am grateful to my son for his willingness to take my blog photos and to make sure I have what I need.

I am grateful that today was a non-busy day, as Mondays are hard enough, especially when cold and wet…

I am grateful for heat in my home that keeps me cozy warm… I pray for those that are without, and hope charities step up.

I am grateful for the customer of my husband’s who gave him Nutcracker tickets, as I really wanted to go, but didn’t want to spend the money with the holidays and saving to get him a new car since he turned in his company truck when we went to Ireland.

I really think wearing a Ruana or Poncho is such fun and instantly makes an outfit…

If you haven’t yet indulged in this trend I highly recommend it…

At a recent trip to Burlington Coat Factory, they had a row that was labled “Sweaters”,

but the entire rack was Ponchos and Ruanas…

Black leggings and booties with a grey t-shirt and Ruana, so simple, yet so chic…

I added a pin that had been my mothers to the shoulder and it worked well…

It’s a good thing as we had a very windy Sunday…

Just in case you didn’t believe me about the winds…

I would have preferred this one silver pin that had been my mother’s but  couldn’t find it right away….

I then remembered that it was still packed in the jelly roll from the Ireland trip..

I was rushing to get dressed and out the door shopping to get home for Football…

My boho side is very happy… I swear if I didn’t like variety so much in my silhouettes,

I’d wear a poncho or ruana wrap and skinny’s every day…..

I am so glad that I added the lace fedora, inherited from my daughter,

because it was so helpful with this windy day….

I can’t help looking at this and wondering what it would look like with

a white top and white skinny’s with grey booties…

I could do that now or even wait for Spring,  such a great thing to see other ways to style a piece

I once steered so clear of due to fears that it would overwhelm my 5’3″  frame…

Dear Readers, I couldn’t just highly recommend a Ruana without giving you some other info, so enjoy this video on how to style one…. And here’s a Pinterest Board I created of some looks... I searched Ebay for some and found these and Amazon and found these. I am also adding the link for The Find, which lists options from various locations..

With these being so on trend right now, they would make a great gift,

perfect as they are one size fits most!

I am grateful that I put the Christmas decorations up this weekend, my first time without my daughter and son…I forgot how spoiled we were when my daughter was an undergrad and got home the first week in December… but now both won’t be home until December 17th…

I am grateful for the help from my husband and youngest…

I am grateful that I was able to listen to my Steelers game online, as the Redskin game meant with some dumb NFL rule that CBS couldn’t run the Steelers /Bengal divisional showdown and instead had filler on today….

I am grateful for a phone call, from my daughter tonight… I love just chatting with my only girl…

I am so grateful that God blessed me with my daughter as my second child…

I distinctly remember owning white shiny Go- Go boots as a child…

I also remember how much I loved them and how sassy I felt in them…

Fast forward to needing to fill a wardrobe hole of lighter footwear for winter….

And here’s what I ended up with…

Of course these aren’t shiny like the ones from my childhood and are cream instead of white…

These are from Chadwicks and can be found here.

Check out these from Target that are more like the ones I had in the seventies

It feels great to have lighter boots to bookend lighter tops and I can’t wait to wear them with a dress or skirt…

And now for a close up of my hair cut and color…

I asked for a carmel shade but gotta say my hair takes the color and adds in red tones every time…

I think it’s my mother messing with me, as she was a natural red-head..I can hear her laughing about it in my heart…

A back view….

All I see is that spot that I have to investigate to see if it’s balding…LOL!

And one more of my outfit..

The pink sweater is new this season from Old Navy..

Dear Readers. Have a wonderful weekend!  My weekend plans involve putting up Christmas Decorations!
I am not looking forward to it as it’s the first year I will have only one helper, and my youngest is not the best helper .

I also need to focus on eating better… I didn’t gain anything on Thanksgiving Day, but lack of sleep makes me crave carbs and that has been happening for a few weeks now… In fact Thursday after my haircut I came home and went to bed by 8pm… but can only string 4 hours of sleep together at a time.. so was up again at midnight. back to bed at 4am, awake again by 8am… I gave up and went back to bed by 10am and slept until 2pm… I finally feel like I caught up on the much needed rest… Whatever this is, it’s a pain for this woman who use to sleep 8 hours and needs that kind of rest!

The lack of sleep not only messes up my diet, it also messes up my exercise stamina… and so the cycle begins…

So going to really focus my determination on eating better and exercising this weekend to try to break the cycle!

I am grateful that I managed to get the much needed rest my body craved.

I am grateful that my hair stylist did a wonderful job once again… I’ve actually been seeing him for 8 years now!

I am grateful that it’s the weekend!

I am grateful for answers, information is comforting..

I am grateful to my dear mother for buying me my first pair of Go-Go boots as a child, it went so against her upbringing and she quite often indulged my need to feel spunky and sassy…

I’ve had these cobalt tribal print jeans by Diane Gilman for a few years now…

And realized today, that I’d never tried pattern mixing with them…

I added the Chevron scarf and liked it and even liked adding the white sweater, as I’ve always worn these pants with black, grey, or brights like yellow and orange…

I’ve shared my love of Diane Gilman Jeans before, here is her current selection

Much like Not Your Daughters Jeans, these are great for the 40 plus among us…I will note that I usually size down one in her jeans, but make sure to read reviews to see if anyone says they are running large or small…

My happy accident was discovering in the daylight that the scarf is actually navy and white, not black and white…

I already own a navy and white striped knitted unity scarf, so now I am going to gift this one to a dear friend…

The set of scarves I bought from No more rack actually had two in this shade and I gifted the other one to my niece…

We had another cloudy day, so two days in a row without sunglasses, a rarity..

I wore my Rachel Zoe for Qvc black trench, also a few years old…

In fact my white sweater found at Bj’s and purse by Just Fab are new,

while even my booties are from Payless last year.

Dear Readers, I bowled for the first time since Summer and got my highest score to date… Now don’t get me wrong I am not that good.. My normal scores range from 100 to 120 , but today I scored 155… We are starting a 14 week league for the parents that I’d been pushing for , so glad to get back into it… Why should our homeschool kids have all the fun?

I am so grateful that the young girl in the homeschooling group who dislocated her knee today is at home sleeping tonight.

I am so grateful for this wonderful set of homeschooling mothers, it’s so rare to get such a kind, fun -loving, supportive, non judgmental and  compassionate group of mother’s  together.

I am grateful that as you read this today (Thursday) I will be with my hairstylist getting a cut and color for the holidays.. yes I had to book the first week of December to get in!  Pics tomorrow!

I am grateful that my migraine went away FINALLY around 5pm…the nausea was terrible, these darn weather changes are terrible…My daughter called today from Boston with the same complaint…

I am grateful that my daughter called today and sounded so relaxed, as all major papers and projects for the semester are done and her exams are all take home papers.

I am grateful that my son passed his ROTC PT testing today, as he didn’t think he could muster the strength for the 60 push ups…he’d been doing only 20, but somehow found the determination to push forward and not give up.. He is very sore tonight, wish he was home so I could set up an epsom salt bath for him….

I thrifted this reversible vest over the summer and have been wanting to style it…

With being in Ireland most of October and cooler than normal temperatures in November,

I feel like I missed all of Fall, when I break out the vests..

I opted to go all Neutrals with grey and black for the first time wearing this…

This color palette matched the day of drizzle and grey  clouds…

The collar is black when worn on this side and the fur when worn on the black side.

My son was making fun of me trying not to get the photos done quickly with wind blowing and cringing at the rain…

I think he took about 30 pictures in hopes a few would meet my approval…

He even rain over and fixed my hair at one point…

Next time I’ll use and umbrella….

I didn’t have anywhere to go today, so the Old Navy Leggings were a great for the day…

I did have to get packages from the porch and mail at the street…

I love the staggering of Black Friday packages that have started arriving…

Dear Readers, What would you call this animal print?

Snow Leopard

Have you taken advantage of Black Friday or Cyber Monday Deals?

If so, what was your favorite find?

I bought one thing for myself on Cyber Monday, as I’ve been coveting it for a long time….

This Metrostyle  grey leather skirt... was originally $89.99 but I got it for 30% off making it $62 with free shipping…

I am grateful that my son is so generous in taking my blog photos and makes it fun for me…

I am grateful that my daughter handles stress so well and is a problem solver like me and finds solutions when she procrastinated instead of beating herself up…She actually forgot a paper that was 1/4 of her grade, but said she needed a vacation so bad that she let herself have one… Sounds about right to me!

I am grateful for dear friends who show me unconditional love, such a blessing in my life!

I am grateful for my husbands job and his consistent success, he’s been there a year now! So nice to have Christmas money all set and not waiting in hopes he will get paid out for sales.

I am grateful for lessons learned by my homeschooler on the importance of note taking…
