Awhile back I put together this look,  with browns and added

Burgundy due to the coloring in the print….

IMG_2480

I loved these colors together, so much that they really stuck with me.

That prompted me to give them another go..

Here’s the result…

IMG_3003

It was really fun to remake the color scheme without relying

on the easy way of adding shades from a print…

IMG_3004

I even mixed a brown and red lipsticks to come up with a burgundy…

In addition I changed my black prescription sunglasses for a tone more appropriate.

Like my windblown look?

IMG_3012

I was happy to get another chance to style my Joan Rivers velvet blazer

Velvet and corduroy textures definitely add an element to this look,

as does the snake skin purse.

Dear Readers, there really are so many ways a blogger can come up with inspiration for outfits.

I like adding this one into my repertoire.

There are so many times that colors I put together are due to pulling a shade from a print , something I recall was my mother’s favorite way to style… Even at her funeral a woman she babysat for told me she marveled at how my mother would pull a shade from an outfit and add it in a sock color for her baby boy.  I remembered my mother coming home after those babysitting days with pure delight at the compliments she received.  I remembered that and have used it so much in my life… I even used it when putting window displays together for my consignment store. I once had an customer come in while I was putting a display together and ask me if I had an art background.. For someone who was never strong at art, this was a huge compliment and I credited it to observing my mother put together outfits.

It is so funny when I sit down to write a blog post, I never know where it’s going to bring me..

Today it brought me to lovely memories of my mother.

Gratitude

Of course I have to start with being grateful that today’s post allowed me a wonderful moment to remember my mother.

I am grateful that the taxes and FAFSA forms are done!

I am grateful for a very lazy Sunday spent reading.

I am grateful for the chance for snow and hope we actually get a little this time..

I am grateful that my college children send texts and pictures to their younger brother, making him feel loved and not forgotten..

Today was bowling day, except not for me…

I went , but due to sciatica did not bowl,

so I decided I would take advantage of that

and style a poncho…

IMG_2871

Normally a poncho and bowling day wouldn’t go together..

I had just as much fun hanging out and chatting with the other parents..

We are all looking forward to Saturday when a few of us are attending a Wildlife Festival during the day,

then the adults are hanging out  without the kids for the night….

IMG_2879

I originally had a different scarf that had grey and teal in it, but saw this one on my way out the door,

and quickly tried it on and lived the more vibrant blues in this one…

IMG_2881

I like wearing scarves or long necklaces with a poncho to break up the wide silhouette

and add in a vertical line…

Poncho’s really are a great background to showcase a scarf or necklace…

Perhaps I’ll have to try the infinity scarf  and a necklace combo from yesterday with a poncho next…

Speaking of ponchos, they are going to be a big trend for Spring…

I also have noticed that Feather Prints and Jewelry seem to be trending for the warm season…

Stylish-Women-Lady-Girls-Bohemian-Summer-Loose-Batwing-Chiffon-Blouse-Tops-Shirt

Which is why I recently purchased my first item for Spring,  this bat-wing top from Ebay

It arrived and is very lightweight and perfect for wearing over a tank top for Summer

Check out this link for all the feather themed necklaces from Forever 21

Gratitude

I am grateful for bowling days and the fun of connecting with other homeschooling families.

I am grateful for the weekend plans and another chance for my son to hang out with his friends.

I am grateful that the heating pad helped my sciatica and gave me a few pain free hours today.

I am grateful my daughter called to share with me that today’s walk to campus was much easier due to the plowed walkways…. after the night before where she was on the phone joking her way through the piles of snow and unpaved roads and sidewalks, rolling over snow drifts and even falling twice , this was a huge relief.

I love the my daughter is much like me and looks for the bright side of things, commenting today that her legs are feeling quite toned from all this walking in snow…

I am also grateful that she has no plans to stay north of home past grad school and likes our area where snowfall is a rare delight… she can always visit Boston since it’s her father’s home…

I am grateful that I have quite an assortment of flat boots for the season to accommodate this bout of sciatica

I am grateful that my home-schooler worked hard today finishing his Biology note taking, the more we do the less trouble he gives me in this… note taking for a kid who hates writing is torture, but he is seeing his own achievements , which was my goal before really pursuing the great adventure of creative writing…

It took me quite awhile to finally find the cognac jacket of my dreams,

which I eventually found at Burlington last season.

I had searched long and hard for the right shade and due to that, will never take this jacket for granted…

IMG_2432

I love the greys and orange tones together…

IMG_2432

I can’t help, but point out a good hair day…

Such a treat after my day began with terrible sinus pressure..

A nap, hot shower, and meds turned the day around, though!

Tomorrow I think these days of clouds and rain are going to be behind us…

IMG_2437

I might have pulled this top up a few inches for a longer leg line,

but once again this is something that shows up on the camera and not so much on my mirror….

Is that a halo of light around my head… LOL…

IMG_2440

Any day I wear cognac is a good day…

Don’t know that I can ever tire of it and am keeping my fingers crossed

this color way stays on trend next Fall as well..

Dear Readers, this past days of rain and grey skies have been really hard, I am so looking forward to a day when the sun peeks out… Tomorrow we are headed to Christmas Town at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. My body aches were much better today, so hopping that means I’ll be up for all the walking…. Last time we went they had a show of Irish step dancers and keeping my fingers crossed they do again…

Gratitude

I am grateful that my sinus pressure went away….

I am grateful for a fun lazy day with my children…

I am grateful that tomorrow the clouds are parting and a sunny day is scheduled!

I am grateful that my husband who normally takes this week off work,                                                              is having a successful sales week, (enough to pay off our son’s tuition for next semester!)

Today I went to the mall with my son, to use gift cards

to complete a few more clothing items to his evolving style.

IMG_2415

With it being a colder rainy day, I opted for my new red Poncho, a Christmas present.

I love this deep red color, a color I use to think didn’t work well for me…

I like the addition of the print top underneath, although a plain black top would look great too..
I really like adding either a scarf or long necklace with ponchos to create a vertical line, a trick for us petites…

I had to stand by my favorite tree without touching it due to the wet days we’ve been having..

IMG_2419

I would normally have thought of my petite height and

opted for a pair of heeled black booties , rather than riding boots..

I, however, knew with the body aches

I’d been experiencing.  that I wanted flats today..

IMG_2426

I am also wearing my new Cloche Hat, found at Amazon Here..

My favorite stylist extraordinaire, Angie from You Look Fab,

recently recommended I add a cloche style hat to my style..

Dear Readers, I had a fun day with my son… anytime I get with just one child individually is special. When my son saw me in my new hat, he called me Mary Poppins.. I had to laugh when seeing the photos with the addition of the umbrella..

My body aches came back late in the day,

but not nearly as bad as they’ve been,

so guess I need to just take it easy…

Dear Readers, Have any of you had the bad luck of catching the virus or full on flu going on now?

Did you get any great fashion items for Christmas?

Would love to hear from you , please leave a comment…

Gratitude

I am grateful that my son and I had a great day together and that he found 3 great new pieces to add to his style.

I am grateful that my body aches are getting better and are definitely not flu related…

I am grateful that my oldest is definitely feeling much better and is on the upswing from his bout with the flu.

I am grateful for phone call from my sister in law today, love her so much..

I am grateful that everyone pitched in and helped clean up my kitchen today.

Today, I went for a very casual look..

It all began with the Aeropostale aztec print sweatshirt…

I bought it on clearance so no longer available..

IMG_2160

I simply added a white tshirt, black skinny jeans and

my chambray boots from Ireland…

I would have preferred a more tight tshirt underneath this ,but this is what I have..

IMG_2157

This is my wonderful houndstooth coat , bought last year from Burlington..

Another wet cold day today… but hey three days in a row with no sunglasses is a treat..

IMG_2165

I am going to move the Merry Chirstmas sign closer so it’s in my pics for the Season…

IMG_2159

Our morning started off with a neighbor ringing the door knob at 8:30 am….

He had two bags of ornaments similar to the ones on our tree that he’d found in his yard that morning…

They aren’t ours.. so my husband asked around to other neighbors and no one claimed them…

Dear Readers, I ate much better today and craved no carbs or sugar!  Now if only I can keep this up..I swear I am so out of whack for a few reasons… One is just the time of year, and it’s been colder than normal.  I think another thing is missing my mother like crazy… I think the five year mark combined with the Ireland trip and seeing the huge welcoming family greatly increased my sense of loss.  If that wasn’t enough this time of life with menopause approaching wreaks havoc, I went months without a cycle that decided to come back in October while on the Ireland trip… I can make excuses or I can stand strong in my resolve to not let his current weight gain remain or get even more out of control.. So, yesterday, I ordered a Fit Bit to keep me accountable for moving more and of my sleeping patterns.. The sleeping has really been an issue lately… I sleep for 4 hours and am then wide awake… Not one to function on such little sleep, I take a few hours to go back to sleep and usually get another 3 hours.. This means waking up at around 10:30 am… I don’t like that ,but it is what it is… Perhaps exercising more and getting rid of carbs and sugar may put that back in order..

Are any of you, my dear readers dealing with weight gain or problems sleeping in this stage of life? Anyone dealt with this and found solutions?  Would love some words of wisdom?

Gratitude

I am grateful that my son finally finished his homeschooling after stalling all day..

I am grateful that my daughter got snow at Boston College before she comes home for the holiday.

I am grateful for fast wonderful protein rich dishes we picked up at BJ’s…

I am grateful that I’ve managed to get a few items for each child that they don’t know about for Christmas..

I am actually wearing two different Hounds-tooth prints today…

My hat is grey and cream Hounds-tooth in a smaller scale.

IMG_2148

I actually planned this outfit without the paisley scarf, but added it last minute.

I just felt the crew neck sweater needed something else…

Both my hat and scarf are from Burlington Coat Factory…

If you are lucky enough to live near one, I highly recommend them for great accessories at wonderful prices.

My sweater is Liz Claiborne via JC Penney and bought on clearance in July, purse is from Just Fab and boots are Issaac Mizrahi via QVC bought previously…

My grey jeggings are a few season’s old, actually they are a remnant of my pre- weight loss days when they fit much tighter… They are by Diane Gilman via HSN and a great quality jegging, here is her current offerings.

Another great brand I’ve discovered for jeggings is Hue, available at Nordstorm and Amazon...

IMG_2149

This is the outside tree that my husband and son planted in a hole in the ground and do every year..

This tree was marked $169 ,but he managed to talk them down to just $50….

So much work goes into planting and staking this tree each year,

and has become a tradition our children appreciate greatly.

I know when the two who are away at college come home and  see this ,they will feel like they are home for the holidays…

IMG_2148

My typical side pose didn’t happen today as it was misting when we took photos…

The misty rain coupled with my teen photographer standing in the street to take the tree photos meant he was jumping around and they all came out fuzzy… He suspected it at the time and apologized, and offered to retake them, but look relieved when I told him we would deal with what we had…

Dear Readers, I have a good hat collection by now and it’s a good thing because I hate winter and really do love wearing hats when I am outside… It’s my real life and not done just for my blog… I laughed at the idea that my new hair won’t get seen much.. I think it’s an added bonus to help create a boho feel to my winter outfits.

Gratitude

I am grateful to my son for his willingness to take my blog photos and to make sure I have what I need.

I am grateful that today was a non-busy day, as Mondays are hard enough, especially when cold and wet…

I am grateful for heat in my home that keeps me cozy warm… I pray for those that are without, and hope charities step up.

I am grateful for the customer of my husband’s who gave him Nutcracker tickets, as I really wanted to go, but didn’t want to spend the money with the holidays and saving to get him a new car since he turned in his company truck when we went to Ireland.

I distinctly remember owning white shiny Go- Go boots as a child…

I also remember how much I loved them and how sassy I felt in them…

Fast forward to needing to fill a wardrobe hole of lighter footwear for winter….

And here’s what I ended up with…

IMG_2084

Of course these aren’t shiny like the ones from my childhood and are cream instead of white…

These are from Chadwicks and can be found here.

Check out these from Target that are more like the ones I had in the seventies

IMG_2101

It feels great to have lighter boots to bookend lighter tops and I can’t wait to wear them with a dress or skirt…

IMG_2110

And now for a close up of my hair cut and color…

I asked for a carmel shade but gotta say my hair takes the color and adds in red tones every time…

I think it’s my mother messing with me, as she was a natural red-head..I can hear her laughing about it in my heart…

IMG_2113

A back view….

All I see is that spot that I have to investigate to see if it’s balding…LOL!

IMG_2087

And one more of my outfit..

The pink sweater is new this season from Old Navy..

Dear Readers. Have a wonderful weekend!  My weekend plans involve putting up Christmas Decorations!
I am not looking forward to it as it’s the first year I will have only one helper, and my youngest is not the best helper .

I also need to focus on eating better… I didn’t gain anything on Thanksgiving Day, but lack of sleep makes me crave carbs and that has been happening for a few weeks now… In fact Thursday after my haircut I came home and went to bed by 8pm… but can only string 4 hours of sleep together at a time.. so was up again at midnight. back to bed at 4am, awake again by 8am… I gave up and went back to bed by 10am and slept until 2pm… I finally feel like I caught up on the much needed rest… Whatever this is, it’s a pain for this woman who use to sleep 8 hours and needs that kind of rest!

The lack of sleep not only messes up my diet, it also messes up my exercise stamina… and so the cycle begins…

So going to really focus my determination on eating better and exercising this weekend to try to break the cycle!

Gratitude

I am grateful that I managed to get the much needed rest my body craved.

I am grateful that my hair stylist did a wonderful job once again… I’ve actually been seeing him for 8 years now!

I am grateful that it’s the weekend!

I am grateful for answers, information is comforting..

I am grateful to my dear mother for buying me my first pair of Go-Go boots as a child, it went so against her upbringing and she quite often indulged my need to feel spunky and sassy…

Last week I asked which Pinterst Inspirations you liked

to see which one to do next and here it is..

IMG_1834

I had to add a necklace to my look….

I am very fond of creating a long vertical line with necklaces or scarves…

For a curvy woman , it’s a wonderful styling trick…

IMG_1841

Notice my hair in the wind….

It was a cold and windy 40 degrees..
I braved it without my customary hat, but that didn’t last long…

I walked to the grocery store shortly after the photos and put on a hat and a long warm coat….

IMG_1849

I knew that chunky sweaters were going to be big this season…

So I scored this Liz Claiborne from JCP online over the summer on clearance…

I love getting another chance to wear my newest investment purse…

It’s by Gili via QVC and can be found here

IMG_1847

This was a perfect Mom on the Go look for my busy day…

The original had black leggings, but I chose to wear my Old Navy Pants found here

and the chambray shirt is Old Navy as well…

I have to say I really like the addition of the cognac boots in this look as another color…

I typically struggle to add a fourth color into outfits, so love that Pinterest advanced my style..

Gratitude

I am so grateful to my son’s friends at college who went above and beyond to make his Birthday day special…

I am grateful that my son called to share how his suite and hall mates had surprised him with a balloon filled room and Large Nicholas Cage picture and assorted quotes…. apparently they planned this for over a month!

I am grateful that when doing PT on this cold morning that they ended it early and that my son decided he needs gloves for next time….

I am grateful that when my Mom gene kicks in and I call  my college son and ask if he is wearing a hat during morning PT, that he laughs with me and is never irritated ….

I am grateful that homeschooling went smoothly today and that he is on track and taking responsibility for keeping up the schedule…

Lucky me that I took these photos Friday…

as I got sidelined and didn’t get any weekend outfits….

IMG_1788

We had such a bright sunny day, but this time of year we get others that are just down right gloomy and cloudy…

I really feel my mood changing when sunlight isn’t pouring in my house windows and greatly appreciate days like this one!

IMG_1792

Daily when we move from my tree photo to the city driveway next door for the remaining photos, my son snaps this overhead picture of the leaves changing colors….So today I thought I’d indulge him and post one…

It’s the least I can do for my dedicated photographer…

IMG_1799

I love wearing sequins in the daytime, as my generation certainly remembers a time when they were reserved for more formal  evening wear.   This top is from a company at ShopHQ called Glitterscape and while my navy top is sold out, it’s available in a teal color for just $12.97.   This tee is lightweight, making it perfect for layering… I layered my chambray shirt underneath for added warmth…

While at the ShopHQ website you could check for other top options in this brand including short sleeved ones.

My Navy Moto is from last year F21, but here is this years collection….

IMG_1803

I love rocking a fedora to keep my head warm of cooler days and will be using a lot of hats in the coming months, as I’ve collected a few in the past couple years.  I’ve always loved hats, but blogging definitely opened me up to getting a bigger variety, something that delights me… It’s such a small expenditure for a great addition that lets my fun character come out.. I still can’t believe my daughter had this lace fedora and never wore it so she gave it to me…

Dear Readers, I am so happy cooler temps have arrived and that boot weather is upon us… Of course I’ll probably be regretting saying that later in full winter, but for now I embrace it!

I mentioned earlier that the lack of sunlight changes my mood, so wanted to share that I have a Verilux Sunlight Lamp that I use during winter months and indeed it does help…

Mine is like this one at Bed Bath and Beyond, I know there are more expensive therapy lights ,but since my symptoms are more on the mild range, this does the trick….

Gratitude

I was sad that I was sidelined with menstrual issues that made me not able to spend Sunday with my son at VCU in Richmond for his birthday celebration (his b’day is Monday and he is 19!), but there is always a reverse to every situation and I really am grateful for an entire day all alone…. it’s so rare these days with homeschooling….

I am grateful that I can see the end near and am looking forward to full  menopause… and while I am at it,I am grateful that I’ve had easy cycles with very mild symptoms for my life….

I am grateful to my son for being so gracious about my not making it to see him…

I am grateful that the 3 guys got to spend a day together and that my husband brought a cake and has his 7 suite mates join in singing to him..

I am grateful for sappy Hallmark movies…

I am grateful for the sound of my content dog snoring deeply.

Today was a cloudy day with light rain and I originally planned to wear my vest like in the inspiration

, but opted for the jacket for more warmth since there was a nice wind …

IMG_1659

My son liked catching this shot when the wind caught my hair…

I love that he cares about the photos he takes and in fact he told me I wasn’t smiling right today…

IMG_1649

That comment from him brightened my smile to this…

IMG_1655

I really am feeling much better today and so happy to be well rested..

Apparently I’d been out of it more than I realized… My husband shared with me today that Monday night he came home and found that I’d left the burner on from making dinner… Then on Wednesday morning after I left for the homeschool bowling group, he discovered that I’d left my omelet maker on (it stays on unless unplugged..) I must point out that this is completely uncharacteristic of me, in fact I don’t ever remember even one such occurrence.   Lack of sleep really messes me up!!!!!

IMG_1662

My outfit is very loosely done by the Inspiration with my switching to jeans

and a brown striped top, and the jacket instead of the vest…

And here is the original Inspiration…

The pants look a lot like my newest ones from Old Navy, pictured here..

Except the faux leather on these are on the inside while mine are on the outside of the leg…

Gratitude

Dear Readers, for my gratitude section today I want to  just share with you the amazing break through with my homeschooling 14 year old…

As I’ve said before I homeschool  him because they had a teaching deficiency that left him with reading and writing problems…We’d solved the reading one completely and I’ve had a few years to delight in that, all the while feeling intense stress that we had yet to get his writing to match his intelligence level… I never really embraced unschooling  but there is something to be said for sitting back and waiting for your child , which is what I ‘ve been praying for…

This morning he informed me that in the mornings while brushing his teeth and dressing that he makes up stories in his head and that they stick in his brain and mess up his homeschooling.   I suggested getting a notebook and writing them out… I saw the look on his face and instinctively suggested it be in a private journal that was just for himself… He looked relieved and agreed getting them down on paper might just be the trick to getting them out of his head.. I gave him a notebook and pen to put in his room and HE  THANKED ME!

I have to tell you I danced!

My reluctant writer is going to write just for himself!

With his joy at how great the book is that he is reading and now this in just the two weeks since I’ve been back from Ireland!   My cup runneth  over!

Wishing you all my Dear Readers, A Wonderful Weekend!
